Sheridan has been recognized by the United Way of Oakville with a Joint Union/Management Campaign Award, a Platinum Sponsorship Plaque and three Special Recognition Plaques. The honours were presented at a gala last week at the Oakville Conference Centre to celebrate the conclusion to a successful 2014 campaign that raised $4.25 million.

Presented to a workplace and its union members that have demonstrated a commitment to community and furthering the values shared by United Way and the labour movement, the Joint Union/Management Campaign Award honours the efforts of Sheridan College and OPSEU Local 244.

Terry Kostiw, a Sheridan professor, the first vice-president of OPSEU Local 244 and Chair of the Labour Division on the 2014 Campaign Cabinet was noted during the awards presentation as playing an integral role in cultivating the partnership that results in time, energy and money towards fundraising for the United Way.

Sheridan was also the recipient of a Platinum Sponsorship Plaque in recognition of the $47,825 raised for the United Way by Sheridan employees and students during its fall campaign. A committee at the college chaired by Terry Kostiw, Nancy Heath and Raj Dhaliwal, organized spaghetti lunches, set up ‘change for change’ piggy banks, sold raffle tickets and ran a silent auction with items generously donated by faculty, staff and local businesses.

Chartwells and Chartwells’ employees Maria Nicholls, General Manager at Sheridan and Chef Kal each received Special Recognition Plaques. Chartwells has been a long-time supporter of Sheridan’s United Way campaign by making food for fundraising events on campus.
