As part of IT’s on-going efforts to improve wireless network services at Sheridan, on Wednesday, March 25 from 10 p.m. until 1 a.m. on Thursday, March 26, IT staff will be taking steps to mitigate interference issues in the G-Wing at the Trafalgar Road campus.

Resolving Co-Channel Interference

A recent wireless site survey highlighted issues with our wireless network caused by co-channel interference. Co-channel interference happens when two or more wireless access points operating near each other use the same channel. This is a problem on the 2.4 GHz spectrum (used by our wireless access points) where there are only 3 useable channels. IT staff will be selectively disabling the 2.4 GHz radio on some of the access points to alleviate these interference issues and improve wireless connectivity in the G-wing.

No Downtime During Service Period

There will be no impact to wireless services while the work is being done. However, following the service period IT staff will be carefully monitoring wireless performance in the G-wing to ensure that the desired result was achieved. In the event there is an unanticipated negative change, the radios that were disabled will be re-enabled again. This is a fast and simple process.
