This Saturday, March 28 from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. is Earth Hour. The annual event has grown in recent years to include millions of participants around the world and invites organizations and individuals to turn off non-essential lights for one hour. Sheridan is committed to energy and waste reduction and sustainable practices in its day-to-day operations and to show our support for this initiative, all campuses will be participating by powering off lights in some areas.
Where lights will be OFF:
- Most corridors in all campuses and public spaces will be reduced to emergency lighting only
- Roadways:
o TRAFALGAR – Sheridan Way & Ceremonial Drive
o DAVIS – Sheridan College Drive (N-S and E-W sections)
- STC parking lot (however the lot will be illuminated by exterior building lighting)
- External lights on the SCAET building (TRAFALGAR)
Where lights will REMAIN ON:
- Classrooms, labs and office spaces at all campuses (unless regularly scheduled to be off or unless an employee chooses to turn off the light in their office to participate)
- Student Union, Athletics and Residences
- TRAFALGAR and DAVIS parking lots
- The wooded trails at TRAFALGAR
- The external lighting at the TRAFALGAR and DAVIS Residences
We are also encouraging employees to consider powering down their computers before leaving the office this weekend and to shut off classroom lights or other electronics if possible. You may also consider participating at home.
After the event, we will be communicating with you the impact that this event has on our energy use, greenhouse gas emissions and cost savings. Stay tuned for more details!
Thank you for your cooperation and participation. For more information please contact the Office for Sustainability at sustainability@sheridancollege.ca.
