Construction Underway at HMC

If you haven’t been by HMC in Mississauga lately, you might be surprised at the level of activity underway.

While much of the work over the winter focused on finalizing the site plan and obtaining permits for road occupancy, fencing, storm-water management and foundations, recent efforts have turned to more visible aspects.

The site excavation and shoring work are well underway, which has made it possible for work to begin on the footings that will anchor the building at its south end. Dozens of cement trucks have made deliveries to the site over the past three weeks. On average, there are 10 tradespeople on site each day.

While buildings are typically built one horizontal layer at a time, HMC will be constructed in several vertical segments, each encompassing many floors, starting from the south end (closest to our existing building) and progressing north to Rathburn Road West.

The first vertical segment will be in place early this summer to allow for the construction of the connecting bridge to our current building. This bridge is needed to house cabling that will deliver power and data to the site that will enable future work to continue.  While classes continue year round, the plan to connect the buildings during the summer is purposeful as it represents the time when the building is at its lowest occupancy.

Stay tuned over the months ahead as we continue to provide updates on what you can expect to see.
