When travelling outside of the country with a smartphone or cellular enabled tablet, long distance, roaming and/or data charges can add up in a hurry. To avoid unexpected surprises when you receive your bill, consider these important money-saving tips:
Turn Data Roaming Off
Even if you’re not actively using your 3G/4G/LTE wireless device, if your data feature is turned on, your device is still using data service (e.g. receiving emails, automatic application downloads). To avoid data usage roaming charges, you can turn off the data feature on your wireless device so only voice and text messaging services work. Refer to your device’s user guide for instructions.
Use Wi-Fi
To get online without incurring major data roaming costs, use the phone’s wi-fi connection. For anything you need to do online—from email to web, text messages to apps—using wi-fi, will save you from sustaining these extra charges.
Put your phone in Airplane Mode if you only need Wi-Fi access
Airplane Mode turns off the cellular and data radio, but on most devices you can leave wi-fi on. So, if you have wireless Internet access (e.g., in your hotel or a free wi-fi hotspot like a coffee shop), you can still go online with your device and avoid the data roaming charges.
Add a Travel Bundle to Your Plan Prior to Travelling
Before you travel, contact the I.T. Help Desk at extension 2150 to add a cellular travel bundle to your cell plan. Plans for US and international destinations are available. You should provide at least one week’s notice prior to your travel date so our provider can set up a plan appropriate to your destination.
Please note: You are responsible for your own mobile usage, including roaming charges. IT can’t reverse any charges once they have been incurred, so your diligence is required.
