Have you ever wondered if it’s okay to take photos or recordings on campus and whether or not you need consent to do so?

To help employees make informed decisions, the Office of General Counsel and the Communications & External Relations Department have created guidelines, a Q and A document and a Media Consent and Release Form to help.

These documents are rooted in Sheridan’s policy to comply with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA), which requires notice to be given, either verbally or in writing when collecting personal information, which includes photos, video and audio recordings.

Please note that consent is not ordinarily required when undertaking these activities in the context of academic and teaching purposes.

As a standard rule, no recording is permitted in areas such as Health, Counselling, the Student Rights and Responsibilities Office or any areas where confidential entrance is obvious or where access is restricted to Sheridan employees. Persons from outside news agencies are permitted to take photographs and film recordings if they have identification unless Security has been advised otherwise. The Q and A document outlines a number of other scenarios which may assist you to determine whether consent is required and how to obtain it.

Should you have any further questions regarding these materials, please contact the Director, Corporate Communications and External Relations at 905-815-4169.
