Thank you to all who attended the Showcase of Teaching and Learning on October 29th. The day was a resounding success!
Thanks to Mary Ventrella from the Child and Youth Care Program for beginning our morning with a mindfulness drumming experience. Thanks also to our keynote speaker, Silken Laumann. Her down-to-earth and personable approach connected with participants. The event ended with TLA 3 posters, continued evidence of the strength of Sheridan’s teaching and learning community.

The Shadiow Project: A different kind of faculty development
The Shadiow Project is an initiative geared toward post-probationary faculty who enjoy reading and would welcome an opportunity to engage in reflective practice and dialogue. Named after and inspired by author Linda Shadiow (Book: What Our Stories Teach Us: A Guide to Critical Reflection for College Faculty), this small group will be using Shadiow’s book as a vehicle to share our stories and guide our conversations. The book will be provided.
The group will meet four or five times through the Winter 2016 semester on Wednesday afternoons.
Post-probationary faculty are invited to express their interest to their home Associate Dean and Theresa Fraser (theresa.fraser@sheridnancollege.ca) for the Winter 2016 semester by December 11, 2015. Five faculty will participate in this offering.
Teaching Squares
Faculty Development is excited to present a voluntary, non-evaluative, peer to peer, personal model of professional development: Teaching Squares.

A teaching square consists of four faculty participants (ideally from different disciplines) who:
- Observe at least one class taught by each Square Partner (a total of 3 observations)
- Reflect on the class observation experience
- Share reflections with Square Partners
- Share Square observations with other square participants (as appropriate)
Your Teaching Squares experience offers you the opportunity to improve your own teaching by observing your square partners in an actual classroom situation. The cornerstones of teaching squares are reciprocity, collegiality, shared responsibility, appreciation, self-referential reflection and mutual respect, the positive attitudes and behaviours that create a mutually supportive, energizing environment for sharing the joys and challenges of teaching.
By participating in the Teaching Squares you will have an opportunity to:
- observe, analyze and celebrate good teaching
- increase your understanding of and appreciation for the work of colleagues
- experience the joy and confusion of being a student
- formulate a plan for enhancing your own teaching based on your observations and reflections and the shared reflections of your Square Partners.
