Winter is on its way! And with it comes the snow, slush, water, ice… and yes, the possibility of slips and falls.
Sheridan is helping to prevent such occurrences by:
- Maintaining parking lots and walkways to ensure that they are clear of snow and ice;
- Adding extra carpeting to absorb access water and produce greater tread under the soles of our boots and shoes;
- Posting wet floor signs in high traffic areas that may be prone to wet surfaces;
- Providing good lighting;
- Installing salt boxes on the grounds to allow our crews to salt icy surfaces more quickly;
- Installing snow fencing to prevent pedestrians from crossing hazardous or unsalted areas.
And we can do our part too. Here are some quick tips to remember when traveling into work this winter season from parking lots, on sidewalks, or between buildings:
- Wear slip-resistant footwear, appropriate for the weather;
- Remove as much snow and water from your boots as possible onto the winter mats when entering the building;
- Take extra care when stepping off the entrance carpet onto the tiled floor
- Use your vehicle for support when getting in and out of vehicles;
- Keep both hands free for balance, rather than in your pockets or carrying too many items at once;
- Take short steps instead of longer strides if you think a surface might be slippery;
- Anticipate hazards even on roads and sidewalks that may have already been cleared of snow and ice;
- Always use the hand railings and plant your feet firmly on each step when using stairs;
- Plan ahead and don’t rush. Give yourself sufficient time to get to your work area.
If you happen to notice any wet floors or icy conditions that may be hazardous, please report it to Security or Facilities right away.
