On Wednesday, March 2, 2016, Sheridan hosted a School College Work Initiative (SCWI) event bringing together approximately 100 teachers, counsellors, and college faculty from across the GTA to focus on the skilled trades. The Apprenticeship Forum provides an opportunity for college professors/staff and secondary dual credit teachers to share current practices, responsibilities, policies & procedures and strategies that would further enhance dual credit student learning in the skilled trades/apprenticeship arena.
Dr. Jeff Zabudsky welcomed the group, provided highlights of the programs offered at STC and mentioned the new facility scheduled to open in 2017. The day was organized around workshop activities and a panel of experts in Early Childhood Education, Electrical and Truck and Coach Maintenance discussed the importance of identifying the appropriate candidates for their skilled trades.
Dan Hammond, program coordinator for Sheridan’s Electrical program sat on the panel while Nancy Potter, Sheridan’s STC math coordinator gave a plenary on the Importance of Math in the Trades. The delegates also participated in a guided tour of the Skills Training Centre and were impressed with the facilities and programs that Sheridan offers. It was an excellent opportunity to learn, network and share in the opportunities of the skilled trades for young people.
