If you are ready to be part of the solution, Sheridan is ready for you! This week, the Zero Waste Pilot is being launched, with new waste bins coming to the B Wing and the Cafeteria area at the Trafalgar Campus. Sheridan College continues to be a higher education leader in sustainability.
The new bins are attached with three colored signs to collect the corresponding types of waste: MIXED RECYCLING, LANDFILL, and ORGANICS AND COMPOSTING. The bins will appear in a set of three and will be located in hallways and by staircases. Smaller sets (called Billi Boxes) will appear in meeting rooms, kitchenettes, and printrooms, and garbage bins in individual offices will be replaced by small hanging baskets.
Here’s what to do:
- Watch for the Zero Waste bins and the important facts written on them.
- Be sure to use the right bin – mixed recycling (blue), organics and composting (green), landfill (black).
- Faculty to remind students to keep classrooms clean by using the Zero Waste bin outside the classroom
- Staff are responsible for emptying your own waste bins into the the Billi Boxes in the kitchenette/printing room nearby at the end of the day.
After the pilot in B Wing, the Zero Waste bins will be rolled out to the rest of the Trafalgar campus and other campuses this coming year. With everyone’s support in diverting waste properly, the Zero Waste bins will help Sheridan meet its Zero Waste 2014 goals as follows:
- reduce its waste going to landfill by 50%
- achieve a waste diversion rate of 65%
- separate and process 100% of its organics at an off-site composting location
