As part of Sheridan’s new wayfinding initiative, Facilities Services will be installing new gender-inclusive signage in our single-user universal washrooms as part of a multi-campus rollout, beginning with the Davis campus.

A Sheridan a universal washroom is simply described as a single-user washroom that all people can comfortably and safely use. Based on inclusive signage best practices, these washrooms will not be labelled male or female, and are signed where applicable with the international symbol of accessibility.

Designated and signed universal washrooms will benefit:

  • Transgender and gender variant persons
  • Parents with children of a different gender
  • Persons with disabilities who require a personal attendant
  • Persons who require increased privacy or personal space

The first set of universal washroom signs will be installed at the Davis campus beginning April 25th, at the following locations:

  • H wing: H302
  • J wing: J102
  • B wing: B104, B103, B302, and B303
  • C wing: C203
  • M wing: M15

This initiative is one of several currently underway to respond to recommendations from the 2015 Gender and Sexual Diversity Survey, which reflected the need for these appropriately-signed spaces on campus. The project has been supported by the Centre for Equity and Inclusion, Student Affairs, the Sheridan Gender and Sexual Diversity Taskforce, and the Sheridan Gender and Sexual Diversity Advisory Committee.
