Please join us in celebrating the retirement of the irreplaceable, and unsinkable Velma Doran, Professor, Early Childhood Education, School of Education, Faculty of Applied Health and Community Studies.

Velma has been an integral team member, and the anchor of the Sheridan ECE program for many, many years! Velma’s involvement with ECE at Sheridan began as the Early Childhood Education diploma program began. As part of one of the first graduating classes of the Early Childhood Education diploma program at Sheridan, Velma found her home, and never looked back. Upon graduating from Sheridan, Velma quickly moved into Early Childhood Educator positions in the Child Care profession, including substantial tenure as the Supervisor of one of Sheridan’s Child Care Centres. Eventually, and with expertise, Velma moved into her current role as a professor, where she spent time as the Program Coordinator and Academic Advisor for the Early Childhood Education diploma program, and was intricately involved with many of the post-diploma certificate programs for the early childhood profession.

Velma has always been unique, respected, valued, and funny; she is not afraid to “tell it likes she sees it” but she is also able to laugh at herself, and encourage playfulness in others. Just being around Velma has inspired a thirst for knowledge in others. As a past provincial and local representative for many professional organizations related to Early Childhood Education, Velma’s advocacy in the profession of Early Childhood Education is far reaching. Velma has unfailingly been instrumental in opening new pathways for students in our programs over the years, and Velma’s warmth is the reason many students and faculty feel a connection to Sheridan!

We will be celebrating this amazing woman, and taking the opportunity to wish Velma our best wishes at a farewell celebration on June 14th (5-7pm) at the Davis Campus (H 153). For more details please see the event invitation.

Hope to see you there!

Cathy Coulthard
Associate Dean
