Hard Drive Partitions on New Laptops for Employees

In the past, IT would partition* the hard drives (C: & D:) on new Windows-based laptops that were distributed to employees. The D: partition was put in place to help transfer files during the laptop lease refresh process.

As the D: partition is no longer used for these purposes, users receiving new laptops, and users who have their laptop re-imaged, will no longer see a D: drive. The removal of the D: partition paves the way for full disk encryption to run smoothly.

Backing Up Your Files

As the D: drive would appear as ‘BACKUP (D:)’ many users would rely on this partition to back-up their files. Just a reminder that if you have important files that you would like to back-up, each Sheridan user is assigned a personal network drive and allocated 300 MB of disk space that is automatically backed up every night.

* a partition is a logical division of a hard disk creating the appearance of having separate hard drives
