The Trafalgar Community Garden, located near the Trafalgar Athletics Centre, is in full bloom this summer. Despite the drought that is occurring in Ontario, our vegetables have been watered daily thanks to the student, staff and faculty volunteers. Since our last update, Herb Lochbihler lead a group of STC dual credit students to construct a wonderful storage shed for us. We have planted a variety of vegetables including eggplants, okra, basil, cherry tomatoes, beets, radishes, lettuce, carrots, tomatillos, red bell peppers, cayenne peppers and super-hot peppers.

The winter squash was the first veggie to take shape, and they are completely outgrowing the planter box they are in (we will make sure we give them more room next year!).

A variety of beets and radishes have been thriving in the heat.

We used the technique of companion planting to maximize the health and flavour of our tomatoes and basil.

The tomatillos have exploded! Each flower should make one tomatillo…that’s a lot of salsa verde!
