Faculty – did you know that in the classroom you are a Faculty Fire Warden?
As per Sheridan’s Fire Safety Plans, Faculty instructing a course have the following responsibilities during a fire alarm:
- Immediately announce that everyone must leave. There is no time to pack up belongings however students may take their laptop with them. Remind everyone that once outside they must move 50 feet (approximately 14 metres) away from the building.
- Direct students to the closest exit door or stairwell. Do not use elevators.
- Help any persons requiring assistance in accordance with their emergency evacuation plan.*
- Close the door on the way out.
- If you have information regarding injury, fire location, persons requiring assistance or persons still in the building notify Security or a Sheridan Fire Warden.
- Follow instructions of the Fire Department and Sheridan Fire Wardens. Do not re-enter the building until permitted to do so by a Fire Warden.
*Students requiring assistance who have contacted the Emergency Preparedness Coordinator will have an individualized evacuation plan in place. If a student in your class has an emergency evacuation plan, Faculty will be notified at the beginning of each term.
Students and visitors in your classroom that require assistance but are without an individualized plan are to be directed to evacuate horizontally into an unaffected building. If this is not possible, they should prepare to protect-in-place.
Protect-in-place procedures:
- Find a room that is safe and away from fire and smoke. Choose a room that contains a phone and a window.
- Shut the door.
- Call 911. Tell them your location and provide details of your situation.
- Wait to be rescued by the Fire Department.
