We are proud to announce that a new Intellectual Property (IP) Policy has been approved at Sheridan, which will take effect one year from now, in September 2017.  To download a copy of the policy, please click here.

The policy was created through a collaboration of the Office of the Provost and the Office of the the General Counsel at Sheridan.  During its two years under development, the policy received extensive consultation.  It received six readings at the Administrative Policy Committee table. The draft policy was shared with Senate.  Each of the Local Administrative Councils (LACs) also provided feedback.

The policy affirms that IP created in Scholarly Works at Sheridan belong to the creator(s) of the IP.  It also states that Sheridan’s ability to use such Scholarly Works for teaching, learning, scholarship and creative activities will be royalty-free, non-commercial, and subject to suitable IP safeguards.  The policy will also protect the rights of students who may create IP while at Sheridan.

The policy consolidates many principles that were previously distributed over 10 existing policies developed at Sheridan between 2001-2013, which will be repealed and replaced with this policy, to make information clearer and easier to find.

An IP Procedures Working Group has now been established to develop associated procedures during the upcoming year.
