2016-Paralegal-Cup-Moot-Competition
On Saturday November 19 and Sunday November 20, Jana Smith and Andrew Wallace, 3rd semester students of the Paralegal Program, competed in a grueling moot competition held at Osgoode Hall in downtown Toronto. In 4 rounds on Saturday, the team presented oral argument both in favour of and opposing a real Supreme Court of Canada decision regarding workplace safety and insurance benefits awarded to seven women who developed breast cancer due to exposure to carcinogenic material in the workplace. Eleven teams from paralegal programs across Ontario competed in the event. Following a nerve-wracking 4 rounds on Saturday, Jana and Andrew made it to the quarter finals Sunday morning and ultimately the final competition against Mohawk College Sunday afternoon. Peppered with questions from the five member panel of “Supreme Court” judges, Jana and Andrew held their own answering all questions professionally and effectively and ultimately won the day! In addition to overall champions, Andrew was presented with awards for Advocacy and Professionalism. Well done team and a shout out to part time professor Barbara Gordon-Elliot who devoted many hours coaching the team and supporting them throughout the weekend.
