As the Zero Waste Pilot proceeds in B Wing and the Cafeteria, we would like to thank those who are participating in the program and helping us putting waste into the right bins (Organics, Recycling and Landfill). A new Zero Waste poster is now up next to each Zero Waste Station. If you have any doubt about where to put your waste item, just check the poster!
We have received a few recurrent questions which are posted below, along with our answers:
Where does the coffee paper cup go?
It goes to the Organics stream (Green bin).
Do I need to separate the plastic lid from the cup?
Yes! The plastic coffee lid needs to be taken off the cup and placed in the Recycling bin (blue). The coffee cup with a lid on is a contaminant in the Organics bin.
What kind of waste goes in the small black basket in my office?
The black basket collects waste that goes to landfill. Remember, you are responsible for emptying it together with your blue box (recycling) at the end of the day or whenever it is needed. This way, we can free the cleaning staff for the cleaning work in other parts of the campus.
What should I do with the Organic waste at my desk?
Please bring any Organic waste you have to the Zero Waste bins which are generally located in the central areas of your office, such as the kitchenette or printroom. By keeping Organics waste out of your desk, we can prevent possible vermin problems in the office areas.
After the Pilot in B Wing , the Zero Waste bins will be rolled out to the rest of the Trafalgar campus and other campuses this coming year. With everyone’s support in separating waste properly, the Zero Waste bins will help Sheridan meet its Zero Waste 2014 goals as follows:
- reduce its waste going to landfill by 50%
- achieve a waste diversion rate of 65%
- separate and process 100% of its Organics at an off-site facility
