Sheridan’s Film For Thought series invites you to a screening of the highly acclaimed documentary The Stairs wherein director Hugh Gibson and some of the film’s participants will join us for an evening of film and conversation.

The Stairs (TIFF 2016 and Best Canadian Film at the Toronto Film Critics Association Awards 2016), follows the triumphs and heartbreaks of three social workers who counsel clients about drug use while also struggling with their own addictions in Toronto’s Regent Park. Using their experiences to ease the paths of others, each works in public health in their old neighbourhood while struggling to maintain their newly-found stability. Told over five years, The Stairs defies stereotypes about drug use, sex work and homelessness through an intimate portrait that is by turns funny, surprising and moving.

In the words of Oscar-nominated filmmaker Sarah Polley, The Stairs is “a huge contribution to the country and to everybody,” and we hope you can join us as Hugh Gibson and the film’s participants discuss the five-year journey to bring this important story to the screen.

  • DATE: March 13, 2017
  • TIME: Doors open at 6:30 pm (light refreshments will be served), with formal programme of screening and Q&A commencing at 7:00pm
  • LOCATION: S235 (SCAET building), Trafalgar Campus

This event is open to the public, and seating is on a first come first served basis, so we would encourage you to arrive early to avoid disappointment.
