South Asians, who trace their origins to many different countries, constitute a significant presence in Canada and have made valuable contributions to the nation. In 2001, the Government of Ontario recognized those contributions in an announcement that May would officially be South Asian Heritage Month and May 5th –South Asian Arrival Day. Sheridan College will celebrate this important month with the launch of “Voices of South Asia.” This event, which is the first of its kind at Sheridan, will feature a series of talks and performances by some of the most talented and accomplished South Asians in Ontario such as Dr. Alok Mukherjee, Distinguished Visiting Professor at Ryerson University and former Chair of the Toronto Police Services Board; Ms. Piya Chattopadhyay, the host of CBC radio’s Out in the Open; and Dr. Vicki Bismilla, educator, writer, and human rights advocate. It will also open up a space for lively discussion about what it means to be South Asian in Canada and about the struggles and successes of those who trace their origins to South Asia. The event is free and open to the public.
