At the beginning of May 2017, Professor Craig Brazil ran the biggest Industrial Mechanic Millwright competition in Skills Ontario’s history in his capacity as Industrial Mechanic Millwright Contest Tech Chair at Skills Ontario, Skills Canada and Worldskills International. The contest featured a record-setting 19 competitors from across the province. Competition winner, Sheridan apprentice Daniel van Veen, progressed onto Skills Canada this past week in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
At the Skills Canada competition in Winnipeg, Craig led a team of National Technical Committee members from across the county, two International Worldskills Experts from Brazil and Taiwan, and external judges from competition sponsors Fixturlaser in two competitions that featured 10 participants from across Canada and two International competitors from Taiwan and Canada. Through this competition, participants prepared for the Worldskills International competition in Abu Dhabi this coming October.
In between these competitions, Craig welcomed Worldskills Industrial Mechanic Millwright competitor, Ming Mong Tso, from Chinese Taipei (Taiwan), and his National Expert, Trainer and Interpreter to Sheridan’s Skills Training Centre for a week of intensive training prior to competing in the Skills Canada competition. The training was based on the challenges Ming would face at Skills Canada. As the Skills Canada competition is aligned to the Worldskills project, it was very beneficial for Ming in his preparation. “This past month has been incredibly rewarding”, Craig said.
In July, Craig will be flying Sheridan’s flag in Taiwan. Worldskills Taiwan has invited Craig in his capacity as Skill Competition Manager for the Worldskills Industrial Mechanic Millwright competition to observe their in-house preparation competition for Abu Dhabi in October.
