Tony awards

On the evening of Sunday, June 11, the 2017 Tony Awards were presented at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Come From Away – the musical first incubated through the Canadian Music Theatre Project (CMTP) at Sheridan – was nominated for seven Tony Awards including Best Musical.

We’re so thrilled that Come From Away’s Christopher Ashley was recognized for Best Direction of a Musical. In his acceptance speech, he paid tribute to the people of Newfoundland who inspired the story and its characters. Read more about Christopher Ashley’s win via the Toronto Star. Also, in case you missed it, the cast of Come From Away performed the musical’s opening number “Welcome to the Rock” at the Tony Awards. Watch it here via Broadway World.

The purpose of the CMTP is to ensure that new musicals continue to get written in Canada. It was not expected that when Sheridan first became connected to Come From Away in 2011 that we’d be following the musical’s success to stages throughout North America including the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on Broadway. With the Tony Award nominations and a win, it’s been quite an exciting journey. Thank you to everyone at Sheridan for your continued support of the CMTP. You can learn about what’s to come in the 2017 CMTP season and the process of bringing a musical ‘from school to stage’ on Sheridan’s Curiosities blog.
