As mid-terms and break week are wrapping up, instructors may be aware of students in their classes who may be struggling academically (non-attendance, low test and assignment scores) and in need of assistance. As part of supporting student development, Student Affairs welcomes referrals of these students to Student Advisement, located within The Centres’ for Student Success.  Early intervention makes it easier for students to make changes that can have a positive impact on their academic progress.

Student Advisors are developmental advising specialists who work with students to:

  • Investigate why they are experiencing difficulties;
  • Recognize underlying issues that may be related to life outside school;
  • Discuss strategies to improve learning, and referral to additional campus resources when required;
  • Explore factors that students will need to consider in their future planning;
  • Work with students to develop step-by-step success plans for them to follow.

The goal of Student Advisement is to help students to continue on the right track.  Options are discussed with them, empowering students to be accountable for their journey at Sheridan. For those students that are completing condensed session courses, Student Advisors are available to discuss their academic progress, reviewing what went well and what things can be improved as they move forward.

The Centres’ for Student Success can be found at the following locations:

Davis – B230;
HMC – A247;
Trafalgar – B104.
