The SSW/CYW Peer Mentors are putting together the first ever Human Trafficking Conference at the Trafalgar campus.
What is Human Trafficking?
Human Trafficking is the selling of humans for sexual slavery or forced labor. It’s a serious crime and violation of human rights. It has become a serious political and legal issue. 80% of human trafficking victims in Canada are female; however, there are an estimated 37.9 million women, children and men who are victims of Human Trafficking around the world. It is a $32 billion dollar industry.
What can we do?
Please join us on Friday, February 14th at 11:30am in the Learning Commons for a flash mob event and protest march to the MacDonald Heaslip Theatre in B Wing. This event is to raise awareness, educate and promote advocacy for those at risk in our community.
From 12pm-1: 30pm there will be featured keynote speakers:
- Detective Martin Dick from Peel Police Human Trafficking and Vice Unit
- Varka Kalaydzhieva from FCJ Refugee Centre
- Shae Invidiata and Katarina MacLeod from Free-Them
- Ann De Shalit from Ryerson University
Celebrity Musical Guest
- Liz Rodrigues and guitarist Juan Valencia (wrote and sang in Eminem’s songs Survivor and 25 to Life).
