Sheridan College is committed to providing a healthy and safe environment for all employees. A cornerstone to achieving this goal is to provide awareness and information on health and safety hazards.
WHMIS 2015
Canada has aligned the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (“WHMIS”) with the Global Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (“GHS”), creating a new system under the name “WHMIS 2015”. WHMIS 2015 replaces the previous WHMIS model (“WHMIS 1988”). WHMIS 2015 uses new classification and symbols to inform workers about hazardous products. To ensure Sheridan employees are educated on the WHMIS 2015 classification and symbols, Occupational Health and Safety Services has developed the new WHMIS 2015 training course (PD4123) in SLATE.
The content of the WHMIS 2015 training includes:
- An overview of the WHMIS 2015 system
- Rights and Responsibilities of various stakeholders
- Hazard groups, classes, categories and pictograms
- WHMIS Labels
- Safety Data Sheets
Training Requirements
As Canada transitions from WHMIS 1988 model to WHMIS 2015 model, Sheridan is required to provide employees with training on both the new WHMIS 2015 and existing WHMIS 1988 models. As a result:
- If you are a new Sheridan employee, you will be required to complete both WHMIS 1988 (PD4120) and WHMIS 2015 (PD4123) training courses.
- If you are an existing Sheridan employee and you have completed WHMIS 1988 training (PD4120), you will be required to complete only the new WHMIS 2015 training (PD4123).
- If you are an existing Sheridan employee and you have NOT yet completed WHMIS 1988 training (PD4120), you will be required to complete both WHMIS 1988 (PD4120) and WHMIS 2015 (PD4123) training courses.
All active full- and part-time employees will be enrolled in the new WHMIS 2015 training in SLATE on Tuesday October 17th and have 30 days to complete the training. Please note: Academic staff affected by the strike are not required to complete this training during the strike period. They will be given a grace period to complete the training upon return.
