The Sheridan men’s rugby team capped a magical season on home turf with a thrilling 31-29 victory over St. Lawrence in the OCAA Gold Medal Game Sunday.
The Double-Blue had to climb out of a 10-0 deficit just seven minutes into the contest, and after trailing 15-10 at halftime, out-scored their opposition 21-14 in the second half.
Third year back Jad Hamade was named the Championship MVP after scoring 16 points (one try, four converts, and one penalty kick).
Tristian Hylton and Matt DaCosta both scored second half tries to propel the Bruins to their first title and were named Championship All-Stars as a result.
Regular season awards were handed out after the game as well, with four Bruins – Hamade, Hylton, Owen Schimpl, and Justin Tota – being named OCAA All-Stars.
In addition to his All-Star award, Hamade was recognized as the OCAA’s overall scoring champion, with 67 points in the regular season.
He also led the league in playoff scoring with 37 points, and is Sheridan’s all-time leading scorer (regular season and post-season combined) with 120 points.
First year head coach Rick Bria was named the West Division and overall OCAA Coach of the Year, posting a 5-1 regular season mark.
The landmark victory gives Sheridan not only its first championship, but also it’s first medal, with the program having only begun six years ago.
