Over the last several weeks, Sheridan’s Screen Industries Research and Training (SIRT) Centre at Pinewood Toronto Studios was featured in several media segments and projects, recognizing the Centre’s growing international reputation in cutting-edge technologies like virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR), photogrammetry, CGI and visual effects.
Daily Planet Feature on SIRT
In early March, Discovery Channel’s The Daily Planet visited SIRT to learn more about their work in photogrammetry, virtual reality, and intelligent virtual humans, and the potential implications of these technologies on the film, education and healthcare industries. Host Sean McShane interviewed Spencer Idenouye, SIRT’s Virtual Productions Lead, and Stephan Kozak, the Centre’s Computer Graphics and Visual Effects Lead.

CBC News: The National feature on VR/AR and 5G
In early March, SIRT also served as the backdrop for The National’s interview with Alan Smithson, CEO of leading VR/AR consultancy, MetaVRse. Alan spoke with CBC’s Renee Filippone about the applications of VR/AR technologies and 5G cellular networks within the healthcare, education, and training fields. SIRT recently completed a federally-funded applied research project with MetaVRse exploring these areas.

CreamVR and Dominic Monaghan – A Curious Mind
Long-standing SIRT partner CreamVR visited SIRT in mid-March to leverage the Centre’s virtual reality and motion capture expertise for the production of their immersive upcoming Earth phenomena show, A Curious Mind with Dominic Monaghan. The show, hosted by Lord of the Rings and LOST star Dominic Monaghan, is a prototype, cross-platform VR engagement show. A Curious Mind is presented by Microsoft and Hulu and is supported by the Canada Media Fund.
