The Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act, also known as Bill 148, was passed by the Ontario government outlining significant changes to the Employment Standards Act, 2000 (ESA), in an effort to enhance employment conditions for employees. The changes that were effective January 1, 2018 include:
- minimum wage
- public holidays
- vacation entitlement
- leave enhancements
- hours of work
- overtime
- scheduling/on-call
In addition, Equal Pay for Equal Work is effective on April 1, 2018, where employers are required to pay casual, part-time, temporary and seasonal employees equal to full-time/permanent employees who do substantially the same work and who work under the same working conditions.
