The Sheridan Bruins men’s basketball team won their eighth national medal over the weekend at the CCAA National Championship tournament, leaving Squamish B.C. with a set of bronze medals.
Nearly two weeks removed from their thrilling OCAA Championship victory – the 11th in team history – on their home court in Brampton, the Bruins faced the role of spoiler in their quarter-final game, taking on the host school from Quest University.
A rambunctious crowd fuelled the home school early on to build a 12-point lead, but Sheridan was resilient and would advance with an 87-84 win after a Trevor Williams three-pointer with 6.5 seconds remaining put the Double-Blue ahead.
In the semi final they faced Red Deer College, champions of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference, and while it was very close for much of the game, the Bruins couldn’t quite find their scoring touch in the fourth quarter and would fall short.
The loss relegated them to the bronze medal bracket where it would take two wins in less than eight hours to take home some hardware, but they managed to pull it off, defeating Holland College 92-85 in the bronze semi final and running past Vanier College 106-76 in the bronze medal game.
Dylan Periana was named a first-team tournament all-star, while Michael Selkridge received a second-team all-star award for a second straight year.
The bronze medal marked the first national medal for the team since they were national finalists in 2006 and was the first national medal for any Sheridan team since the women’s basketball team were national finalists in 2009.
