Note-sharing sites such as Course Hero and OneClass are intended for students to share their own notes, but unfortunately many course materials are being posted without their faculty member’s permission for cash or other incentives. It is a violation of College policies, and in many cases, copyright law.
Library and Learning Services and the Academic Integrity Office have created several new initiatives to encourage students to refrain from using these websites and instead, consult with their professors and academic support services for their learning needs. These include:
- Messaging on SSU’s Twitter and Facebook accounts and Sheridan TV
- An announcement to students on SLATE, in collaboration with CTL
- Updating the Academic Integrity Tutorial to add information on the problems of sharing course materials on the Internet
- Presentations to faculty groups
To learn more about what faculty can do to protect their course materials, please visit sheridancollege.libguides.com. If you would like to direct your students to more information about note-sharing sites, please share the Copyright Services Guide with your students. For general information about academic integrity and how to avoid engaging in a breach, please direct your students to the Academic Integrity Office’s Student Resources page.
