Sheridan recently lent a helping hand by leading a Demand Control Ventilation (DCV) project for Holland Bloorview Children’s Rehabilitation Hospital.
DCV is a modern and efficient way to control airflow throughout buildings like schools or hospitals, based on room occupancy and need. Reducing operating costs and increasing comfort, DCV allows the owner/operator of a building to move away from the costly practice of constant, 24/7 ventilation.
With this project, there was a need to identify the investment required and the payback to the hospital, so an energy consumption study was commissioned by Sheridan, which quickly put the project in motion.
Seven air-handling units were chosen for the study and put under 24/7 metering over a five to seven day period. Toronto Hydro loaned its energy analyzers for logging the data. In collaboration with Toronto Hydro, Sheridan compiled the information and repeated the process with DCV. After the data was analyzed, the College provided the estimated cost savings.
With the rebates received from Toronto Hydro and Enbridge ($43,454 and $28,853, respectively) and the cost savings realized ($65,000), they achieved their return on investment of the project within the first year. The DCV enabled the hospital to reduce overall hydro consumption by 10% and natural gas consumption by 11% in 2017. With the savings, the hospital was able to reinvest some of the money into other energy-saving projects and continue retrofitting its facilities this year.
As part of the Integrated Energy and Climate Master Plan (IECMP), Sheridan’s Facilities Services, Office for Sustainability, and Faculty of Applied Science and Technology (FAST) are proud to provide guidance and services to support surrounding communities.
Thank you to Toronto Hydro, Chris Beaver of FAST, and the Holland Bloorview Children’s Rehabilitation Hospital for allowing us to share our vision with them.
