Due to ongoing construction-related activities on HMC 2A, we are requesting that all blackout blinds in the rooms listed below remain completely lowered in order to minimize your exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays emitted during welding processes. Additional safety signs will also be posted in designated classrooms.

As construction continues, you may hear a series of loud noises generated from structural beams being put into place. Should this noise become a concern, please contact Facilities Services at constructionfeedback@sheridancollege.ca

What is welding?

As defined by the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS), welding is the joining process in which metals, or sometimes plastics, are heated, melted and mixed to produce a joint with properties similar to those of the materials being joined.

What areas will be affected?

The following areas will be impacted: Creativity Commons (NW corner), B290, B290a, B296, B390, B392, B394, B396, B490, B492, B494, B496, B592, B594, and B596.

What potential hazards may I become exposed to?

The bright light emitted during the welding process, known as an arc, emits harmful sources UV radiation, similar to those from sunlight, that can cause permanent injury to your eyes.

How can I mitigate this risk?

Despite this risk being relatively low to community members in the area, please ensure all blackout blinds remain completely lowered during the hours of 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Security will conduct periodic monitoring of identified locations.

Having the blinds in a lowered position will offer protection against UV radiation emitted during the welding process, as the blinds are specifically designed to provide protection against UV rays.  In addition, having the blinds in a lowered position will also act to mitigate any discomfort and distraction that the bright lights pose during welding activities.

How long is this work expected to occur?

Welding-related work is expected to continue until April 2019.

Who can I contact if I have questions or require additional information?

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Occupational Health & Safety Services at ohsservices@sheridancollege.ca or at ext. 2515.

To report identified hazards, please contact HMC Security at ext. 4044 for immediate assistance.
