If you are considering renovating your house in the near future, you may wish to consider working with Sheridan’s Architectural Technology students.
Students currently enrolled in the Residential Building Renovations course in their final year of the Architectural Technology program are in need of some ‘real’ renovation projects to work on as part of the semester’s coursework. If you are contemplating renovations to your house and are willing to work with Sheridan students, they may be able to assist you in the development of design ideas and the provision of architectural design drawings.
Given the time students have to work on this project, they are currently seeking projects that are neither too large nor too small in scale. The ideal renovation project could involve some interior layout changes to an existing house, or the construction of a small addition; however, there are many types of projects that could be suitable, so please contact Dan Acimovic at dragan.acimovic@sheridanc.on.ca to discuss further details.
FAQs
Q: What is required of me?
A: You will meet with a small group of students (2 – 4) in your home to discuss your design needs. You will need to:
- Provide the student team with a copy of a property survey plan (if available, but not mandatory).
- Provide access to your house for the students to undertake a general architectural survey of the existing house and lot (with your presence).
- Meet with students in your home to review their design ideas and provide them with feedback.
- Complete a form that evaluates the success of the design and the professionalism of the students.
Q: What will I gain from this?
A: You will receive a set of “as-is” drawings illustrating the existing house configuration. A series of concept design proposals for a renovation to your house usually including floor plans, elevations, sections and 3-D drawings.
Q: What is excluded?
A: The drawings will illustrate conceptual design information only. If you decide to proceed with the renovation, detailed design and construction drawings would have to be prepared by others.
Q: Will this cost me anything?
A: No. Students will be undertaking the work as part of their course of study.
Q: Will Sheridan guarantee the work?
A: No. While every effort will be made to ensure that the resulting concept design meets all of the appropriate building codes and zoning by-laws, Sheridan cannot take responsibility for the design work. If you decide to proceed with the renovation, it is recommended that a design professional be engaged to verify compliance of the design with all applicable codes and by-laws and to prepare permit drawings.
