journalist shortlistedLast week, second-year Broadcast Journalism students in the Online News Production class at Sheridan received news that their project had been shortlisted for a prestigious, international 2014 Data Journalism Award. Their project, Digitally Dependent Relationships: Gen Y Online, explores millennial relationships with the online world and how digital communications have changed the way we interact with others.

Coordinated by two Sheridan faculty members, Nicole Blanchett Neheli and Cheryl Vallender, the project emerged after changes were made to the Online News Production class to make it more of a student-driven course. Students determined the subject of their final data projects in the course and presented them to their peers, and then voted on one that they wanted to explore further.

Sheridan’s student project is amongst a notable group of competitors including projects by the New York Times, Mother Jones, the Tampa Bay Times, and ProPublica. Read more about the awards and the shortlisted finalists here.
