The Faculty of Animation, Arts and Design is sponsoring “Temporary Contemporary,” a public art installation at Sheridan for a third year.
As stated in the Request for Proposal to the wider artistic community of Toronto, the objective is fivefold:
- To bring innovative and original artwork by high profile artists into the Sheridan community.
- To enrich the experience of students, faculty and staff at the Sheridan Trafalgar campus with stimulating and challenging artwork.
- To animate and elevate the quality of our public spaces with engaging artwork.
- To integrate this artwork into curriculum through an artist’s talk, workshops and projects related to the installed artwork.
- To link the Sheridan Community to the broader cultural and artistic milieu.
The FAAD is delighted to announce that our jury—composed of Sheridan and community members—unanimously selected the work of Jon Sasaki.
Jon is increasingly emerging as a Canadian artist of note, whose work is described in the press as “sophisticated and rigorous,” and noteworthy for its “conceptually inflected wit.”
For Sheridan, Jon has proposed the installation of a work titled “ A Clock Set to 24 hours into the Future,” that he describes in this way:
I am proposing to build a “clock tower” for Sheridan College campus, above the Main Entrance to D Wing. But unlike most campus clocks, this one would be set 24 hours fast, always displaying “tomorrow’s time.” Of course, on a four-numeral digital clock, tomorrow’s time would appear indistinguishable from “today’s time,” and therein lies a small bit of levity that I hope would open up to a range of poetic and relevant interpretations. A clock tower running 24 hours fast would in fact be practical and functional in the present, but serve also as an aspirational signpost pointing towards the idea of tomorrow.
Subtle in intent, the project explanation would be displayed just below the clock tower installation, at the entrance to Sheridan.
