The City of Brampton is considering a new proposal by academics from the University of Guelph with help from Centennial College to construct a research-oriented university in the city. On June 25, Brampton city councillors unanimously approved a proposal to create an institution based on a model similar to the University of Ontario Institute of Technology in Oshawa. In November 2013, Brampton city council endorsed Sheridan’s aspirations to become a university as part of its higher education strategy at which time the city also specified the goal of attracting a research-focused institution to Brampton. The city believes that having both institutions would significantly benefit the community. This latest proposal responds to Ontario’s initiative to expand PSE enrolment in the province.
