If you are working at or visiting HMC, you will notice the white wall-mounted bins have now become Zero Waste (ZW) stations. A third white bin has been added to each set of bins. Each ZW station collects waste in three streams: Organics, Mixed Recycling and Landfill. New ZW stations have also been set up in the office common areas. Thank you to Danilo Perucho’s team at Facilities Services for installing the new bins and supporting the rollout of the ZW program at HMC last week. As part of the Phase 2 rollout in Davis, the ZW stations are now set up in the hallways and office common areas in C and M Wings as well as in the Student Centre.
When you are throwing out your waste, please take a moment to read the labels and signs attached to ZW bins in the hallway. As well, at each ZW station in the office areas, a poster is provided to guide you to sort the waste according to three streams.

Please note that the “Mixed Recycling” bin collects a variety of recyclable items. Below are a few common questions regarding the use of this bin:
1. Should I throw my half- finished soft drink can into the Blue bin?
No, please make sure you empty the can first. You can pour it down a kitchen or washroom sink. No liquid or food waste should go to the Recycling bin. Food waste should be disposed of in the Organics bin.
2. Should soft drink cups with wax coating go to the Blue bin?
No, these disposable cups should go to the Landfill (Black) bin. So should the straws.
3. Should my paper coffee cup go into this Blue bin?
The coffee should go in the Organics (Green) bin. But make sure you separate the plastic lid which should go in the Blue bin.
