On Tuesday, September 23, Sheridan faculty, staff and students gathered in the atrium of the Hazel McCallion Campus for a presentation and refreshments in celebration of the new “S” sculpture that was recently installed. For additional photos of the event, please see the Faculty of Business newsletter by Prof Mark Rust http://wp.me/pjz7z-2vf
The artist behind the “S” sculpture, Pierre Poussin, who is also a Sheridan alumnus from the Furniture Design program, was in attendance and addressed attendees about his experience creating the piece. Similar sculptures have previously been unveiled at Trafalgar and Davis. HMC’s “S” is located at the south end of the building facing the intersection of Prince of Wales Drive and Duke of York Boulevard . The “S” is an integral part of Sheridan’s Get Creative rebranding.
In remarks made by Sheridan’s President and CEO Jeff Zabudsky, some exciting information about the new building on HMC was announced. Construction is expected to get underway in October, with the building projected to open in fall of 2016.
Some of the features of the new, 22,000 square-foot facility will include:
- 28 new studios, labs and production spaces
- 29 new classrooms
- A main-floor, public art gallery
- A creativity commons
- One bicycle garage and two new bike room showers
The new building will be home to the following programs to encourage collaboration:
- Sustainable Built Environment (including architecture, interior design, interior decorating)
- Creativity
- Communications
- Business
- Advertising
- Visual Merchandising
The new building will be used by approximately 5,600 students, nearly doubling the current student population at HMC. It will also be the third most energy-efficient academic building in North America using approximately half of the energy that is typically used to power a building of its size.
The Sheridan celebration wrapped up with refreshments and draws for prizes. Cupcakes with Sheridan-blue icing and double-blue and orange slushies were prepared by Chef Kal and his team.
