Every September, November, January and March, more students are considering program withdrawal than any other time of the year. Over the 2012 and 2013 academic years, during these 4 months alone, 778 students connected with a Student Advisor because they were thinking about program withdrawal.
Some students need to take time away from college. However, in other situations, Student Advisors can help students persist in their studies. Some students are simply unaware of their options and the supports that could make a difference in their educational experience and their lives. Student Advisors provide encouragement and aim to empower students.
In a single developmental advising session, Student Advisors meet with students to:
• listen to their story.
• explore their options.
• review available supports and services.
• develop an action plan.
During advising sessions, it’s common for students to say, “I think I’m in the wrong program”. In cases of career uncertainty, Student Advisors can review information about all of Sheridan’s programs, direct students to appropriate on-line career tools and book individual Career Counselling sessions. Student Advisors also discuss their current program and address any other underlying issues. This is just one example of the tailored approach Student Advisors apply to each student.
Student Advisement welcomes your referrals. Please direct any student who is considering program change or program withdrawal, to Student Advisement, located in the Student Services Centre. Got Questions? Get Answers!
