With the upcoming November 21 deadline to drop a course without academic penalty, students frequently reach out to those they have connected with throughout the term. As a reminder to staff and faculty, it is essential to provide students with the entire picture of the implications to dropping a course(s). Some of the key discussion points with students include:
- Is the course a pre-requisite/co-requisite?
- What are the costs associated with re-taking a course?
- When will the course be offered again?
- Are there any financial implications (OSAP eligibility, 3rd party funding requirements etc.)?
- Are there implications of a students work/study permit?
- Will this impact participation on varsity teams?
- How will this effect co-op eligibility?
- Is the student still eligible to stay in residence?
Student Advisors conduct developmental advising sessions, taking a holistic approach with each student. They make sure that each student is aware of the potential implications of dropping a course(s). A visit with a Student Advisor will also include strategies for successfully completing the term including connecting students with:
- Meeting with faculty
- Tutoring
- Library and research services
- Counselling Services
- Accessible Learning Services
- Any other campus service to ensure student success
We encourage you to direct students who are considering dropping a course(s)/withdrawing from a program to visit Student Advisement to discuss their options. Remember, Got Questions? Get Answers!
Student Advisement is located in the Student Services Centre.
