Beginning on Saturday, June 22 and concluding on Sunday, June 23, IT staff will be migrating the academic and administrative desktop infrastructure from the current ShernetXP domain to a new, upgraded domain, Shernet. A domain is a collection of clients and servers under the control of one central security database. Within a domain, users authenticate once to a centralized server known as a domain controller.
What this Means for Users
The implications of this change are much like those that affected users when the recent password expiry policy was introduced—you will need to update your credentials for any and all services that reference the soon to be former SHERNETXP domain. For example, currently when you log into your home directory on the SHERNETXP domain you type in your username preceded by SHERNETXP as illustrated below:
- SHERNETXP\username
Following the domain change update, your log-in will simply be:
- SHERNET\username
The services affected by this change include:
- Printing
- Shared network drives
- Personal network drives (home directories)
All staff and students will receive direct email during the week of June 17 with further details and links to updated documentation for the affected services. The IT website will also have all of the latest information.
