In response to concerns expressed by HMC employees and students about the timing of traffic lights near the campus, and snow clearing on sidewalks and the ‘Cineplex/IMAX Theatre Lot’, we would like to take this opportunity to share the following updates:
Traffic Light Timing
We consulted with the City of Mississauga and have learned that on weekdays, Rathburn Road West operates under three signal timing plans:
- Morning Peak period (7:00 am – 9:00 am)
- Off-peak period (9:00 am – 4:00 pm & 6:30 – Midnight)
- Evening Peak period (4:00 pm – 6:30 pm)
During each peak period the MAXIMUM time a pedestrian and/or motorist can expect to wait is:
Rathburn Road West at Living Arts Drive
- Morning Peak period – 2 minutes 34 seconds
- Off-peak period – 2 minutes 9 seconds
- Evening Peak period – 2 minutes 34 seconds
Rathburn Road West at Duke of York Boulevard
- Morning Peak period – 2 minutes 19 seconds
- Off-peak period – 2 minutes 19 seconds
- Evening Peak period – 2 minutes 44 seconds
Please keep in mind the maximum times noted above represent a ‘worst case’ scenario; wait times are dependent on a number of factors including at what point, within the traffic signal’s cycle, the pedestrian push-button is activated, or when a vehicle is detected on the side street.
Snow Clearing Improvements
Sidewalks
The clearing of snow from sidewalks and walkways surrounding HMC is the responsibility of the City of Mississauga. We recently met with representatives from the City’s Transportation and Works Department, who have redefined Sheridan College as a high priority area and a targeted area of focus. This means the City will allocate and expedite more resources to snow clearing, particularly on heavy snowfall days.
Sheridan ‘Theatre Lot’ Parking Area
We also met with OMERS representatives (property owners of Cineplex/IMAX ‘Theater Lot’) who assured us that the designated Sheridan parking area will be high priority for snow clearing. OMERS understands our early hours of operation and will have the lots cleared accordingly.
Thank you for taking the time to read this update – we welcome your feedback at parking@sheridancollege.ca.
