Retirement Notice – Office of the Registrar

$

It is with full hearts that we announce Karen Marlatt’s retirement from Sheridan after 36 years of service.

Karen’s time at Sheridan began as a sprightly young student in 1972 in the Retail Fashion program.  If you know Karen, the program suited her very well, and she has certainly put her fashion knowledge to good use.  She worked for a few years in the industry she was trained in, but she was eventually pulled toward her lasting love: education.

Karen began her career at Sheridan in 1981 in the Office of the Registrar in the Admissions department before she left briefly to start her family.  She returned in 1986 in the Office of the Registrar as well as the Athletics department, and became full time in the Recruitment department in 1988, where she has remained for 29 years.  She has since become known as a legend in Ontario’s high schools and colleges.  It is rumoured that Karen single-handedly recruited at least 100,000 of our 160,000 alumni.

Karen has held positions of leadership on college network committees and Sheridan’s own College Council, was a life skills coach, a True Colours trainer, and the lead marshal for convocation for 25 years.  Karen is a firm believer of finding the right student for the right program, and she will tell you she loved her job representing the College and helping students until the day she left.

Karen’s last day working on campus was during our Convocation ceremonies at the beginning of June, and she will be taking some well-deserved time off before her official retirement at the end of August.  We wish Karen the very best for this next exciting phase of her life, which she will no doubt enjoy with her four young grandchildren.

Thank you Karen!

Email/Calendar Upgrade for Employees Begins Saturday, July 29

On Saturday, July 29 from 7 p.m. until 11 p.m. Information Technology will be upgrading the employee email and calendar system. The upgrade will take us from Microsoft Exchange version 2013 to version 2016. Some of the new features you can look forward to include:

  • Improved search capabilities and assorted performance improvements

Outlook on the web: the former Outlook Web App (OWA) is now known as Outlook on the web. It features user interface improvements and platform specific experiences for Android and iOS users. Note that Outlook on the web will also feature an updated log-in screen.

Email upgrade screen shot difference

The upgrade process itself is quite seamless and most employees should not experience any significant disruptions—if you happen to be accessing email during the upgrade period, you may be disconnected and required to restart your mail client or web browser.

Migration of User Mail Boxes
Following the server upgrade, employee mailboxes will be migrated to new servers. It will take about two weeks to migrate every employee’s mailbox. This work is being done after hours to minimize disruptions. Again, you may be disconnected and required to restart your mail client or web browser. Once your mailbox has been migrated the most visible change will be to Outlook on the web, as noted above.

Update Your Office Suite
While older versions of Outlook (Outlook 2013-Windows; Outlook 2011-Mac) are compatible with Exchange 2016, we recommend that everyone use Outlook 2016 for the most seamless user experience. Outlook 2016 is available as part of Microsoft Office 2016.

For Sheridan Workstations: Download via Access Sheridan
Office 2016 (Mac/Windows) is available for download via Access Sheridan for use on College owned/leased computers. Look for the link Software Installation under the heading Software for Sheridan Laptops & Workstations.

For Employee Home Use: Download from OnTheHub
To download Office 2016 for home use, please see Discounted Software from OnTheHub.

Outlook on the web
Outlook on the web (formerly Outlook Web App), is also a recommended choice for any platform (Windows/Mac/mobile). It works for Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge, Safari, Chrome and Firefox. You will be able to access Outlook on the web by going to:

Tour de Sheridan: Activity, Community and Coming Together!

Sheridan College hosted its second annual Tour de Sheridan on Friday, July 14th.

The Tour de Sheridan was offered to all students, staff and faculty and over 30 riders, including both new and avid riders, registered for the day.

Unlike our first Tour de Sheridan, which was only a two-campus event, all three were included this time: HMC, Trafalgar and Davis.  The goal of the Tour is to promote healthy living and to take advantage of sustainable modes of transportation.

The cyclists rode from their respective campuses and met up at Lake Aquitaine Park in Mississauga. The riders peddled a combined 92.6 km, riding from and back to each campus. If we split that up, that’s 11.4 km from Davis, 16.2 km from the Hazel McCallion Campus and 18.7 km from Trafalgar to Lake Aquitaine Park one way, then add the return trip.

The participants were split into two groups. The first was a casual riding group and the other, was for the more serious cyclists who timed themselves.

There was a slight chance the event wouldn’t go ahead as planned. Rain was threatening to put a damper on proceedings, but thankfully it held off for the most part. When they arrived at the park all riders were treated to refreshments brought by the SSU, enjoying great views and good conversation. They also received prizes such as bike lights and reusable Tour de Sheridan water bottles.

Some of the riders expressed their thoughts on the Tour de Sheridan and its success this year.

“My overall opinion of this years event is that it was great. I always pay attention to the Sheridan insider and these kinds of events really stick out for me.  I’m all for anything that involves activity, community and coming together,” Trafalgar IT specialist Michael Mitchell said.

“Thankfully the weather co-operated today, we got to spend time with friends we don’t see often and it’s a great form of exercise,” Vikram Saili, an IT specialist at HMC said. “I think we should do this more times a year, look at the turnout this time around, it’s much bigger than last year.”

After refreshments were served the event organizer Wai Chu Cheng, Sustainability Coordinator, spoke to the group thanking all of those who supported the event and came out to ride.  A big thank you goes out to our special guest Pat Saito, Councilor of Ward 9 in Mississauga, who gave a welcoming remark to the participants.  A group photo was taken in front of the lake and everybody was on his or her way back to campus.

Thanks goes out to the Region of Peel sent two bike ambassadors for the Davis group and provided the bike lights as prizes for participants. As mentioned before, the SSU helped by bringing refreshments in the form of juice and snacks to help with the cyclists return trip. Thanks to the Green teams and Mission Zero, who helped organize and promote the event.

The purpose of the Code for Professionalism and Civility is to articulate the overarching standards of behaviour which we already follow every day.    After being here for 10 years I feel fortunate to be a member of the Sheridan community, and I know it is our people that make it a special place.

I have chosen to do a brief video to introduce the Code rather than a lengthy written description here.  Please take a moment to follow the links below to watch the video and then review the Code.

Allocation of 50th anniversary funds at Sheridan

On April 7, Sheridan welcomed the Hon. Kevin Flynn, Minister of Labour and MPP for Oakville to the Trafalgar Road Campus, where he announced $2,801,400 in new funding to Sheridan as part of the Province’s celebration of the college system’s 50th anniversary.  At the time, we announced that $400,000 would be directed to new welding equipment for the skilled trades programs, and $600,000 would support renovations and enhancements to the Library and Learning Commons at Trafalgar.  We promised to report back on how the remaining $1.8 million would be allocated.

Following an internal consultation involving the Vice Provost and Deans, a number of projects were selected for funding, primarily aimed at upgrading program equipment and facilities in FAAD, FAHCS, and FAST.  Examples include a CNC Turning Centre and CNC Vertical Mill for the Skilled Trades Centre; classroom and studio upgrades in FAAD; and new equipment and upgrades for programs in FAHCS.  In addition, there are planned upgrades to the Davis Library, including new carrels and dividers, as well as the installation of a Medicine Wheel Garden Classroom – a teaching tool for educating students about Indigenous heritage and history – at the Trafalgar Campus.

These important investments in our programs and student support infrastructure will be ongoing over the remainder of the fiscal year.  We extend our thanks once again to the Province of Ontario for this generous investment in Sheridan.
