Hoping to get away for a vacation or take photography lessons next summer? Maybe replace your tires or upgrade your bathroom? Whatever you are saving for, the CSB Payroll Savings Program can help you make it happen.

How it works

You decide how much you would like to save each pay. That amount will automatically be deducted from your pay and transferred to your Payroll Savings Plan. Without having to do a thing, the savings in your Payroll Savings Plan will continue to grow, and be accessible any time.

Why Canadians like the Program

Over 900,000 Canadians from coast to coast use the CSB Payroll Savings Program to save for the things they want, and here’s why:

  • It’s free: there are no hidden charges or fees.
  • With automatic payroll deductions, you never miss your money.
  • Small contributions can equal big savings.
  • It’s complementary to other savings and investment products.
  • Access to your funds online anytime.

Interested?

You can enroll in the Program by logging on to CSB Online Services during the campaign period, which runs from 1 October to 1 November (closing at 8 p.m. ET). Follow the simple steps outlined in the Employee How-To Guide, or view the How-To Videos and make sure to use our Organization ID: 12627.

Already on the Program?

During the October campaign, you can change your existing contribution amount if you wish, using CSB Online Services. If you want to continue with your current amount, no action required. It will continue to be deducted as usual.

For more information on the CSB Payroll Savings Program, contact payroll@sheridancollege.ca, or visit the Program web site at www.csb.gc.ca/employees.

What are you saving for?

This past May and June, 24 students from Bachelor’s programs in Illustration, Animation, Photography & Interior Design participated in Sheridan Bachelor Programs @Italy, a unique study abroad opportunity.

Currently on view in the A wing Showcase hallway, is the process and production of their amazing efforts.

Based in Florence, the group explored the museums, pallazos, market places and private studios of Florence, Rome, Bologna and the Tuscan countryside before ending the 34 day adventure in Venice- investigating the historical heritage of the sights, but with an emphasis on the resulting contemporary and vibrant culture.

The First Year Library Team is hosting an Exam Jam on Wednesday, November 25th at the HMC campus from 10-4:00pm.

An Exam Jam is an event that combines academic study sessions with fun, stress-relieving activities for students. We launched Sheridan’s first Exam Jam in December of last year with great success. Click here for a recap of the event.

We’re looking for faculty help.

The First Year Library Team wants to engage our first-year students as they enter into exams by providing academic support via course study sessions. We are looking for faculty volunteers to run study sessions for any course at the HMC campus.

Are you 70+ and ready to influence how companies do business?

Did you know that for the remainder of the 21st century, the fastest growing consumer group in the world will be 70 years and over and they will continue to control a sizable chunk of the world’s wealth?

However, here’s the reality of the world today. Research (Leger Marketing The Revera Report) reveals that 63% of seniors feel they have been treated unfairly or differently because of their age, and 79% of Canadians agree that seniors 75 and older are seen as less important and more often ignored than younger generations in society. Further, research conducted by organizations today typically ignore Canadians 70+, demonstrating their lack of interest in and understanding of issues pertaining to this influential group. We care about what you think and we want to hear from you.

AGEWORKS™, in collaboration with Sheridan’s Centre for Elder Research, is establishing a 70+ Consumer Insight Panel to provide you with the opportunity to “have your say” on matters that are important to you.

If you are interested in completing this initial survey, please click on the link below and it will take you to the survey.

If you have any questions or concerns about the research, please feel free to contact:

Sheridan University Self-Study Site Visit

On September 28 and 29, Sheridan had the pleasure of hosting Dr. David Docherty (President of Mt. Royal University in Calgary, AB) and Dr. Ralph Nilson (President of Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo, BC).  The two presidents visited Sheridan to conduct a site visit that was part of our self-study assessment to gauge our readiness to apply for membership in Universities Canada.

Dr. Docherty and Dr. Nilson visited three of our campuses over the course of their visit last week. They met with numerous members of our Sheridan community and participated in two open sessions attended by members of the community and faculty.

We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who was involved in the site visit, from those who participated in the sessions, to those who provided encouragement and to those who assisted with the organization and set-up of the visit itself. As always at Sheridan, collegiality and team-work was very evident and contributed greatly to the success of the visit.

We extend a special thank you to Dr. Mary Preece, our very own Provost and Vice President, Academic for her leadership during this Self Study process. Kudos to you, Mary!

The follow-up report being written by Dr. Docherty and Dr. Nilson will be sent to Sheridan in December, following which time we will share their comments and recommendations with our community. Their initial feedback has been positive and we look forward to receiving their complete report which will help us with our planning and time frames as we continue to move forward on our university journey.

On Wednesday, October 14, Julie Lalonde, an award-winning advocate and public educator will visit Sheridan to present a free lecture for students and employees. The “Draw the Line” campaign which Ms. Lalonde represents works to challenge myths about sexual violence, educate audiences about consent and equip bystanders to intervene safely and effectively to help prevent sexual violence.

The talk takes place at HMC, room A145 from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Ms. Lalonde will then take questions from the audience from 12:00-12:30 pm. Registration is not required.

This event will be live-streamed via Sheridan TV. To watch this online, click here.

This talk is being co-presented by Sheridan Student Union and Sheridan’s new Taskforce for the Prevention of Sexual Assault and Sexual Violence. It is part of our combined effort to address sexual assault prevention and response and to strengthen Sheridan’s commitment to be a respectful, caring and safe community.

On Tuesday, October 13 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm, the Child and Youth Care and Social Service Worker Programs are organizing a “Take Back the Night” walk at the Trafalgar Campus. Employees are welcome to attend. Please meet at SCAET S235 if you are interested in participating.

As a reminder, should you become aware of a person in our community who is experiencing difficulty but aren’t sure how to help them, please visit: https://www.sheridancollege.ca/about/respectful-and-safe-communities/sexual-assault.aspx The site has been created to help people file a complaint, learn about available resources and direct people to agencies that can help.

You also may begin to notice a new awareness campaign unfolding on our campuses called Dare to Care. Dare to Care is built on the concept of bystander training, which teaches people how to be proactive in helping others in need. The name Dare to Care was selected to purposely challenge each one of us to speak up when we see or hear something concerning and to lend a hand to students or colleagues who may require assistance.

We encourage all members of the Sheridan community to Dare to Care about Sheridan and have the courage to support one another.

General Call for Residential Renovation Projects

$
0
0

If you are considering renovating your house in the near future, this information might be of interest to you.

I am currently teaching the “Residential Building Renovations” course to students in their final year of the Architectural Technology Program. My students need some ‘real’ renovation projects to work on as part of the semester’s coursework. If you are contemplating renovations to your house and are willing to work with Sheridan students, they might be able to assist you in the development of some design ideas and the provision of architectural design drawings.

Given the time our students have to work on this project, we are looking for projects that are neither too large nor too small. The ideal renovation project could involve some interior changes to the layout of an existing house, or the construction of a small addition. However, there are many types of renovation projects that could be suitable – so please do not hesitate to get in touch with me to describe your project and discuss if it might be appropriate.

Q:  What would you have to do?

A:  –  Meet with a small group of students (2-4) in your home to discuss your design needs.

– Provide the student team with a copy of a property survey plan (if available, but not mandatory).

– Provide access to your house for the students to undertake a general architectural survey of the existing house and lot (with your presence)

– Meet with students in your home to review their design ideas and provide them with feedback.

– Complete a form that evaluates the success of the design and the professionalism of the students.

Q:  What will you gain from this?

A:- A set of “as-is” drawings illustrating the existing house configuration.

– A series of concept design proposals for a renovation to your house usually including floor plans, elevations, sections and 3-D drawings.

Q: What will you not gain from this?

A:  – The drawings will illustrate conceptual design information only. If you decide to proceed with the renovation, detailed design and construction drawings would have to be prepared by others.

Q:  Will this cost me anything?

A:  No. Students will be undertaking the work as part of their course of study.

Q: Will Sheridan guarantee the work?

A:   No.  It must be recognized that students are undertaking the work as part of a course of study. While every effort will be made to ensure that the resulting concept design meets all of the appropriate building codes and zoning by-laws, Sheridan cannot take responsibility for the design work. If you decide to proceed with the renovation, it is recommended that a design professional be engaged to verify compliance of the design with all applicable codes and by-laws and to prepare permit drawings.

If you are interested in finding out more, please email me using the contact information below. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sheridan Response to the Syrian Refugee Crisis – Update

Sheridan has recently held discussions with the World University Service of Canada (WUSC), which has operated a Student Refugee Program since 1978. WUSC is also a partner organization of the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE), and a registered charity.

Representatives of WUSC travel to refugee camps in countries worldwide to select candidates for postsecondary studies in Canada, ensuring that they are academically prepared and pass English language testing, and that they pass Canadian immigration criteria.

We are now in the process of joining WUSC, the first step towards sponsoring refugee students. As part of the process, an internal committee comprised of faculty and students is being struck to liaise with the agency as required by WUSC.

We will continue to keep you updated as our relationship with WUSC develops. In the meantime, employees who wish to make monetary contributions in support of refugee students are encouraged to visit the link below:
