This installation was designed by Sheridan’s Second Year Visual Merchandising Arts students: Kelsie Chale, Maria Murillo and Keontay Brown. Check it out in the J wing window at Trafalgar.
Instead of searching hundreds, maybe even thousands of job opportunities, MAGNET has employers chase you! The Career Education Team has now incorporated MAGNET into its many online services. Co-founded by Ryerson University and the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, MAGNET reduces unemployment by connecting local businesses and organizations with students.
Student’s leaders and staff have been working hard to get the word out about MAGNET. You may have spoken to our Peer Mentors about this initiative or even seen advertising on campus. Recently, Career Education worked with three talented Visual Merchandising Arts students, Kelsie Chale, Maria Murillo and Keontay Brown. The three students created a display within the J wing window to present MAGNET. Visual Merchandising has many complex aspects including presenting ideas to the client, budget constraints, design concepts as well as project deadlines.
The group explained the design process after completion of the project.
“We brainstormed ideas and after collaborating our individual concepts, we were all on the same page in using the Magnet “M” as an actual magnet to visually represent how the site attracts your career rather than searching for a job as other sites do.”
Kelsie, Maria and Keontay also wanted to focus on diversity of the student population as well as programs that Sheridan offers.
“Our main focus was to make sure the display was gender-neutral as well as nonspecific to a certain career path, we wanted to speak to as many students as possible. We believe that we have successfully illustrated both the brand message of MAGNET as well as the service offered.”
Expressing concepts can be complicated and the students did experience some setbacks. “Our biggest issue in creating this display included space limitations of the window itself, as well as the unique angle of the window. If we were able to make adjustments for our design in the future, we would make the M itself slightly smaller so it could fit on one plane, this would make it easier to view the message of the window from all angles. All in all we are very happy with the final outcome of the window.”
The final product received praise from not only Sheridan staff, but also representatives who founded MAGNET including Ryerson University. In addition, positive and inspiring feedback was also provided by students through Sheridan’s social media pages. This resulted in the registration of students for MAGNET’s online service.
The Career Education team would like to congratulate Kelsie, Maria and Keontay for a job well done!
