The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is excited to announce that a series of public history posters designed by Sheridan Students will be displayed at the Oakville Museum on a rotating basis from April to September as part of the permanent exhibit Freedom, Opportunity and Family: Oakville’s Black History. The posters were designed by Sheridan students taking the general education elective – Canada in the Making: Exploring Canadian History. Their assignment was to research and produce a poster contribution to public history – in this instance, an important person or event in Black Canadian History. Public history performs an important social role, engaging with communities and aiming to raise historical consciousness among the general public.

Earlier this year, several of these posters were also showcased at the opening night of the Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton (CCAH)’s kickoff celebration to Black History Month to much acclaim. The event was attended by approximately 150 people from the community including representatives from both the municipal and provincial governments and the feedback given on the posters was nothing short of tremendous.

The Oakville Museum at Erchless Estate is located at 8 Navy Street in Oakville and is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday 1-4:30pm. We hope you will have a chance to visit the museum and view these outstanding works of public history.
