The first President’s Creative Challenge 2015 mini-conference featured a diverse range of discussions on ‘Internationalization: Envisioning Sheridan without borders’. Proposals ranged from ‘Cultural Conversations’ through pairing students with older adults, to using software for building a language translation infrastructure for Sheridan.

President Jeff Zabudsky emphasized the importance and relevance of a discussion on internationalization at Sheridan during his opening remarks. The mini-conference brought to light eight very distinct perspectives on internationalization in post-secondary education through poster-style presentations and discussions.

Margaret Sanderson, Manager, Diversity and Inclusion, Centre for Respectful and Healthy Workplaces, who was part of the group that presented on ‘Using Amara Enterprise to Translate and Caption Sheridan Videos’ says: “Participating in the President’s Creative Challenge 2015 gave me and our team the opportunity to think very broadly about initiatives that will support greater engagement and inclusion of our international students, and benefit all faculty, staff and students. We were very pleased to share our final proposal at the mini-conference!”

The response to this year’s challenge has been very positive. The final mini-conference will be held this coming Friday, May 1 at the conference centre in the Brampton Residence building on the Davis campus. The event will begin at 9:00 am sharp and all are welcome to participate, for part or all of the day.

Background: The theme for the 2015 PCC: Internationalization: Envisioning Sheridan Without Borders was selected to recognize that Sheridan’s international student population has grown to over 4,000 students strong. The challenge was put in place to acknowledge that internationalization is much more than recruiting international students to campus and that as a community, we can broaden our approach to internationalization.
