From Tuesday, May 5 to Friday, May 8, Spotlight Sheridan was held at the Davis Campus.
Spotlight Sheridan is an exciting opportunity for Grade 7 students to visit Sheridan and experience college life. This initiative is financially supported by the School College Work Initiative (SCWI), which is jointly funded by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities. Spotlight Sheridan provides a platform to share the value of a college education at an early stage in a student’s educational career, and provides insight into possible career paths.
More than 700 Grade 7 students from Halton, Halton Catholic, Peel and Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Boards attended the event. Students participated in four different workshops infused with Sheridan’s unique experiential learning focus. Each workshop was developed and delivered by Sheridan’s excellent and dedicated faculty.
Students were given the following learning opportunities: venturing into an animation career and drawing animated characters; discovering that germs may be harder to get rid of than expected; correctly bandaging a favourite furry friend; creating ethernet cables and learning their functionality; discovering the importance of physical activities; experiencing the process of handling crime scenes; building tall structures and learning the physics behind them; programing miniature, electronic LEGO cars around a race track; understanding the importance and fun of math; learning the dynamics of group behaviour; and packaging medicine (in the form of candy!).
In addition to faculty participation, Sheridan’s Student Admission Representatives (STARs) contributed their energy, leadership and positive attitude throughout the event. They were assigned groups of students and acted as their guides and leaders for each workshop.
Initiatives such as Spotlight Sheridan help empower students when making important decisions early on and broaden their knowledge of the countless possibilities awaiting them. As one of the teachers eloquently mentioned: “At the end of the day, many students were rethinking their post-secondary plans. I think it actually opened up a world of possibilities for some of them.”
Thank you to all those involved!
