The Truth and Reconciliation Commission was established by the federal government as a comprehensive response to the Indian Residential School legacy, to acknowledge the injustices and harms experienced by Aboriginal people and the need for continued healing.
As Canadians, it is our duty to hear the truth, if we are going to have reconciliation. Justice Murray Sinclair, chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, recently told a post-secondary audience that Canada’s historical treatment of Indigenous peoples is the beginning of “something special.” At Sheridan, we could not agree more.
Sheridan is embarking on a process to ensure that the richness of Aboriginal culture, history and worldviews is infused within our community, for the benefits of our Aboriginal learners and non-Aboriginal learners. The first step for the Sheridan community is learning more about the past, and the goals set out by national organizations to strengthen Aboriginal education. This session will also allow us to embark on a process to determine how Sheridan can play a leadership role in moving forward from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
We strongly encourage you to learn more about the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and its reports.
This event will take place on Friday, January 15th at the Trafalgar Road Campus in the President’s Boardroom, located on the Second Floor of B-Wing.
