On December 15, 2015, faculty, staff and members of the Waechter family gathered in the FAST offices at Davis to unveil a memorial plaque in honour of faculty member Doug Waechter. The plaque was erected to commemorate a $50,000 gift given to Sheridan by Doug’s sister, Marlene Waechter.
Marlene generously donated $50,000 to establish the annual Doug Waechter Memorial Award for a student in the Computer Systems Technology – Software Development and Network Engineering program.

Throughout his tenure, Doug worked as a professor, teaching Operating Systems and Systems Architecture, program coordinator, chair of Applied Computing, principal in curriculum development in operating systems and mathematics, and was pivotal in the conceptualization of the capstones.
Doug’s academic background was in math, possessing both a Bachelor’s of Science and a Master’s degree in mathematics.
Demanding of students, Doug was a true advocate of student success. Doug was also instrumental in student outreach to South America, particularly Peru and Brazil, and was fluent in Spanish.
